If you've driven past Harrybrooke lately, you've probably seen the heavy equipment and the "closed" signs and wondered what's going on. Here's the scoop: we're in the middle of one of the biggest improvement projects this park has seen in years. What's happening We're repaving the entire park. Not patching and not touching up. Every road through the park (except the exit) was dug up, regraded, and is being repaved from the ground up. A few highlights you'll notice right away: The parking lot by the pond is getting paved for the first time. EVER! It's been a dirt lot for as long as anyone can remember. No more mud season, no more dust clouds in August and no more regrading 4 times each year. The big bump on the way in is gone. Yes, that bump. The one that's rattled every car, stroller, and bike that's come through our entrance in the last 2 years. It was hiding a drainage problem, so they dug it out and fixed the issue underneath before paving over it. The work is being done by Circle Asphalt, right here in New Milford. It means a lot to have a local company taking care of a local treasure. When will the park reopen? We'd hoped to reopen around October 1, but Mother Nature had other plans. All the rain has pushed us back, and paving needs dry weather to be done right. We'd rather wait a little longer than rush it and do it twice. Reopening is weather-dependent, so the best way to know when the gates open is to follow us on Facebook and here on our website. We'll post the moment it happens. In the meantime, please stay out of the park while the crews work. There's heavy equipment moving around, and fresh asphalt will need time to cure. What's waiting for you when we reopen Fall doesn't end when the paving does. Once we're open, the trails along the Still River, the Harden Garden, and the Harden House Museum will all be waiting for you. So will George and Alice, our resident peafowl, who I suspect are enjoying the peace and quiet a little too much. Scarrybrooke is still ON Good news for the brave: the paving will not delay Scarrybrooke Haunted Trail. Our 13th year runs October 16 through October 30 (5 nights) rain or shine on the roads. As always, parking is at the Pettibone Community Center, 2 Pickett District Road. Grab your timed tickets online and come get scared for a great cause. Something special this November One more thing to keep on your radar. Harrybrooke runs without any town, state, or federal funding, so every improvement you see happens because this community shows up for it. Starting November 1, we're launching Twin Sycamores: Community Rooted in Generosity, running through Giving Tuesday on December 1. More details soon, and I think you're going to love it. Thanks for your patience while we get the park ready for its next chapter. It's taken us a long time to get this far and it's going to be worth it. And friends, this is only the beginning! See you soon, Billy Buckbee Executive Director, Harrybrooke Park
